The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is to DECIDE – SPECIFICALLY what you want.
This may seem like an obvious step, but you’d be surprised by how many people only have a vague idea of what they truly want. “I want more money”, “I want to be happy”, “I don’t want to live like this anymore”. The first two statements are far too vague. If you got an extra hundred dollars you weren’t expecting, you’d have more money. In the second statement – define “happy”… And the third statement is focused on what you DON’T want! The universe – the energy that surrounds us all, cannot compute a negative or negation. The universe interprets the third statement as “I want to live like this more”.
Once you have discovered or identified your purpose, you must them decide specifically who you want to be? What do you want to do? What do you want have? What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to experience? Where do you want to be? (Next year, in three years, five years…) You don’t have to identify all of these, but the more specific you can be, the more likelihood you will achieve it. Think of your wants as a command to the universe – as if you are ordering something from a catalog or store where your description is so crystal clear that anyone would know exactly what you wanted beyond a shadow of a doubt. It is so clear that if someone were to follow your instructions or description to the letter, you would receive precisely what you have asked for.
You have to understand that vague desires produce vague results. Think back to a goal that you have set in the past and how clear your outcome was defined, compared to what you actually received or accomplished. The easiest way to do this would be if you want something that already exists, get pictures of it, whether it be a clothes, a new car, a new house, or whatever it is. In addition, have someone take pictures of you in the clothes, in the car, in the house – sending a signal to your subconscious mind, to the universe, to God that you already have it. This creates dynamic tension in the Reticular Activating System or (RAS), a specific part of your brain that drives your behavior.
When you were a baby, you knew exactly what you wanted and you either went for it with no fear, or perhaps in the beginning you simply cried or cooed for what you wanted and it was given to you. You knew when you were hungry and you knew what foods you liked and what you didn’t like. You had full confidence in expressing what you wanted. You had everything inside of you that you needed from the moment of conception.
Unfortunately, in many cases, early childhood programming often gets in the way of what you REALLY want. Inside of each one of us is the seed of greatness, the essential ‘You’ that you were meant to be. The sad fact is that seed may have been buried in response to your parents, siblings, grandparents, teachers, coaches or other well-meaning, or perhaps even not so well-meaning adult role models who didn’t know any better themselves as you were growing up. This early programming has unfortunately been ingrained into our subconscious and has become a part of our identity.
Although the word ‘identity’ sounds permanent, actually it can be reprogrammed through a specific process and you can create a new identity that is aligned with who you want to be.
