Engage the power of goal-setting to Get Everything You Want – Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible! Happiness requires goals. Earl Nightingale once wrote, “Happiness is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal or goal.” The truth is, you feel happiest when you are making step-by-step progress toward something that is important to you. Victor Frankl, the author of Man’s Search for Meaning, stated that the greatest need of human beings is for a sense of meaning and purpose in life.
Goals provide you with a sense of purpose and meaning – they give you a sense of direction. As you move forward toward the completion of your goals you feel more competent and confident in yourself and your abilities.
Once you know your life’s purpose, formulate your vision, and clarify what your true wants, needs, and desires are, you have to convert them into specific, measurable goals and objectives and then act upon them with the certainty you will achieve them. Humans are goal-seeking beings. Whatever goal you give to your subconscious mind, it will work continuously to achieve.
How Much, By When
One acronym you may be familiar with when it comes to goal-setting is the SMART goal formula. It goes as follows:
- Specific – your goals must be specific; you must describe your goal in such detail that an outsider who has no knowledge of your goal would know exactly what it was that you wanted with no chance of misunderstanding
- Measurable – the completion of your goals must be measurable; this is the ‘When’; by when will your goal be completed? Make it specific; i.e. 6:00 PM EDT, Monday May 31, 2010
- Action-oriented – you must be able to take action on your goal and you must take some action immediately after setting your goal to begin to create momentum; nothing really happens until you take action!
- Relevant – goals must be related to your purpose and vision; being clear about your purpose and holding your vision clearly in your mind, your goals must be relevant to this vision
- Timely – related to ‘measurable’, your goals must move you closer to the completion of your vision; be sure to chunk your goals down into steps you can complete in a short period of time so you are making regular progress toward the completion of one of your larger goals
If you are missing any of these criteria, your desire becomes more of a ‘wish’, ‘preference’, or simply a ‘good idea’. In order to fully engage your subconscious mind, your goal must fulfill all of the above criteria. for example:
I want to make more money
| GOOD IDEA | GOOD GOAL |
| I want to make more money | I earn $1000 per day by 6:00 PM EST, Saturday December 31, 2010 |
| I need to lose some weight | I weigh 128 lbs. by 9:00 AM PDT, Sunday May 31, 2011 |
If you examine the commonalities of all religions, philosophies, metaphysics, psychology, and success you’ll learn that all of them agree on this one truth: “You become what you think about most of the time”. Your outer world ultimately becomes a reflection of your inner world, mirroring back to you what you think about. Whatever you think about continuously over time emerges as your reality.
